In this article we show that the end-times events outlined in the gospels (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21) line up perfectly with the seven seals of the Book of Revelation, and that these can be grouped into three distinct phases:
- The beginning of the birth pains
- The great tribulation
- The day of the Lord
Phase 1: the beginning of the birth pains
This phase corresponds to the first four seals of Revelation:
- Deception
- Wars and violence
- Food scarcity and inflation
- Various judgments, including pestilences and famine
[Revelation 6:1-2] Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.
[Revelation 6:3-4] When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.
[Revelation 6:5-6] When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine!”
[Revelation 6:7-8] When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.
Here is the same phase in the gospels, containing the elements of deception, wars, famines, and natural disasters.
[Matthew 24:5-8] Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.
[Mark 13:6-8] Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.
[Luke 21:8-11] Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.
Phase 2: the great tribulation
This phase starts with the opening of the fifth seal and sees a dramatic increase in the hatred and persecution toward believers.
[Revelation 6:9-11] When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.
Here is the same phase in Matthew 24:
[Matthew 24:9-14] Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
[Matthew 24:21-24] Then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
The same in Mark 13:
[Mark 13:9-13] But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
[Mark 13:19-23] In those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be. And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days. And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand.
And the same in Luke 21:
[Luke 21:12-19] They will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. This will be your opportunity to bear witness. Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. You will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your lives.
Phase 3: the day of the Lord
This phase starts with the opening of the sixth seal.
[Revelation 6:12-17] When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of their WRATH has come, and who can stand?”
Here are the same events in Matthew 24.
[Matthew 24:29-31] Immediately AFTER the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
The same in Mark 13:
[Mark 13:24-27] In those days, AFTER that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
And the same in Luke 21:
[Luke 21:25-27] And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
From the above three passages we can see that between the end of the great tribulation and the coming of Jesus (the rapture) there will be a relatively short period of time when “the powers of heaven will be shaken.” The exact duration of that period is still a mystery to me.
After Jesus returns and raptures His church, the day of the Lord begins, which is the season of the final outpouring of God’s wrath to destroy the wicked once and for all.
The chronology of Revelation
As we saw in this study, the seven seals are spread over all three phases of the end times, and that is very clear. You must now wonder, where does that leave the seven trumpets and the seven bowls?
It is important to understand that the Book of Revelation, like all the prophetic books of the Bible, is not written in chronological order. The Revelation is a puzzle comprising many scenes. Solving the puzzle involves figuring out first where each scene begins and where it ends, as well as the order of the scenes.
In particular, unlike what most believe, it’s not true that the seven seals are followed by the seven trumpets then by the seven bowls. If we insist on that to be true, the end-times puzzle becomes unsolvable, with quite a few verses contradicting each other. The only way to put the puzzle together is to understand that events of the Book of Revelation are not in chronological order. As Sherlock Holmes would say, when you have eliminated the impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
